Wireless vs Wired connections?

I have a wireless router and it has wired connections. How do I make sure my computer, wired by ethernet cable, is using the cable instead of wireless? I'm using Windows 7 and when I'm wired (have wireless turned off) I have the square box icon for my connectivity. When I turn wireless on so others can use the connection I get the signal bars.

My problem is we have 3 iPods, 1 iPhone, 2 laptops, a PS3 and another 2 phones that can all be on at once. When I'm on Facebook, and everyone else is on Facebook I can't load a page or send a message. It's driving me crazy.

If I could make sure my computer gets the wired bandwidth and the others can fight over the wireless (currently one laptop on Skype and 2 iPads on Facebook and me here).

Suggestions please.

Added (1). I apologise, I should have added the type of router:

Linksys WAG320N - 4 wired ports.

Added (2). Thanks Dan Karas,

My problem is everyone else gets good facebook connectivity except me. If I bring my Laptop home I can get the same connectivity. But the one wired computer to the Linksys router is the one that facebook won't load or send messages. Unless everyone else goes to bed. Most other things seem to happen at reasonable speeds.

Depending on your router/modem, you probably can't unless you have a high quality one. I've had the same problem and I had a D-Link600:L Good luck

It really doesn't matter, all connections to the router whether they be Ethernet or Wi-Fi share the same WAN bandwidth.

Let me explain,

A router connects two separate networks and manages the traffic between them.

In most home network applications the router connects your local group of computers and devices known as the LAN with the Internet, commonly called the WAN or Wide Area Network.

Your WAN speed is determined by your ISP and is measured in Mbps (Millions of bits per second).

If you pay for a 3 Mbps Internet connection, you will get 3 Mbps.

No router or connection type will change your 3 Mbps Internet speed.

This Internet connection bandwidth is shared by your entire LAN via your router.

For example if you have a 3 Mbps Internet plan and one user is utilizing 2.5 Mbps of the bandwidth to stream a Netflix movie that only leaves 0.5 Mbps for all of the rest of the users on the LAN.

Fast routers are designed to stream large files on your LAN quickly. The high speed routers permit fast transfer of files between devices connected to your LAN, however WAN speed is still limited by your ISP.

Only way to get a faster Internet connection is to upgrade or change to a faster ISP.

There are some ways to regulate bandwidth by specific devices or processes. Many routers let you configure QoS settings.

QoS, or Quality of Service, is a method for controlling traffic priority on networks.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quality_of_service

QoS is usually configured for applications such as bittorrent, but can be configured for IP addresses or devices by MAC. Http://www.howtogeek.com/75660/the-beginners-guide-to-qos-on-your-router/

  • Wired AND Wireless EARPHONES? I'm looking for some new earphones and because of my iPhone being stupid and not having an AUX cord i want a pair of both wireless and wired IN-EAR EARPHONES, does anybody know of some? Just to clarify I want one pair of earphones that can be both.
  • Why can't my laptop find network connections? My laptop is a gateway model W34oui and it was doing just fine til then, but when I went back on after I'd shutdown the laptop. The network connections seem not to be showing. I mean every time I refresh, it say window can't find network connection. It funny that my iPhone has the Wi-Fi connection also -.-. And no I don't have ethernet cable. I use people connection. (Sorry that me) Anyway Can anyone help?
  • What wireless router can handle many connections? When all the family is home we can have at most up to 15 devices connected to the router (5 iphones, 2 tablets, 4 laptops, 2 pcs, PS3, and a Smart TV). When they all automatically connect to my current wireless router it becomes very slow. What is a router for about $50-80 that won't get bogged down from so many connections?
  • Question about using a wireless router wired and wireless? I was wondering with a wireless router can i hook up my mac and ps4 wired from the wireless router while also using my iphones and ipad wireless from same said router?
