Would a scammer take a deposit?

I'm buying an iPhone and I wasn't able to pay by PayPal and I didn't want to send through the money on bank transfer for her to mail it to me as I got scammed a few weeks ago trying to buy a phone. The girl said I could pay a deposit of $30 and as soon as I receive the phone I could pay the rest of the money… Does that seem dodgy or would a scammer not bother for $30?

Scammers want money for nothing. $30 is cash for nothing.

Yes.

NEVER buy electronics like that - buy in person only - they might send you a non-working phone and good luck trying to get your money back

No, scammers don't like money. Hate it. Hate money.

Scammers don't care how much money you send. If just 100 people send $30, that's $3000 the scammer made
NEVER buy any phone unless it's IN PERSON and you can have it checked out at a phone store to make sure A) it's not counterfeit and B) it's not stolen/blacklisted
You would be insane to buy a phone online unless it's from a reputable retailer like BestBuy, T-Mobile, the Apple Store, etc. Everything else is going to be a scam
And when buying from a person, not a store, ALWAYS meet at the phone store where THEY have an account. If they have any excuses why this isn't possible, either it's a Chinese fake phone, the phone doesn't exist, or it's a stolen phone.

  • Why do AT&T, Verizon and Sprint need a deposit? Because I went to any AT&T couple weeks ago to get the iPhone 4 and the guy told me I needed a 300 dollar deposit, why do you need it
  • Why are all wireless companies charging a deposit on iPhone 5s? I've tried every cell phone company and they never mention a deposit fee, until I enter all my info then submit. On the finalizing page, they all say I have to put a $400 deposit down. Does anyone know why all companies are doing that?
  • Sprint mobile credit/deposit? I've had virgin mobile for the past two years. Now I want to switch to Sprint to purchase the iPhone 5. Being only 21 years old I don't know how my credit score would affect with trying to open a sprint account. I'm living in a dorm and I only pay my internet/cable bill that has my social security number on it. I make those payments on time. And have nothing in collections. Would I be able to open a sprint account without a hefty deposit?
  • IPhone 5 Additional Deposit? I purchased the iphone 5 online on the apple website after 10pm to be eligible for the next day instore pickup. I just checked my account and the money has been withdrawn, but on the apple website it say there may be an additional in store deposit. Can someone please tell me will i have to pay and additional deposit? And if yes. How much will it be?
