My husband thought he lost his AT&T IPhone 5 and bought other one. Can his original iPhone be unlocked so I can use it with another carrier?

Yes it can. You will need to use a unlocking program found by a simple Google search. There are multiple how-to's on youtube and they are relatively simple. Remember, unlocking the phone voids any and all warranties given to you. There are no legal ways to unlock a phone unless you buy the phone unlocked from apple or you pay the early termination fee and your carrier will unlock it for you.
