Yes, updating the phone will take awhile, but it's worth it. Once it's updated, you will be given a short tutorial and then you can start using your phone again. None of your photos, contacts or music will be lost during the process.
Never do an upgrade without first creating a back up in itunes… Back up.upgrade… Then enjoy the phone. You do not have to put on a passcode.
