Can stolen iphones & ipods be traced?

So, basically no lecture I know its wrong dada dada da.

I've heard of people stealing iphone 5's from the back of a van, and selling them off as cheap as 200 for iphones and 100 for ipods, basically can these phones be traced, or can a network determine if its stolen?

"find my iphone" feature…

Yes, once a phone is reported stolen. When they go to register the phone with a carrier, it will be flagged as a missing device/stolen/ whatever it says on their screen. I believe the imei number is what is used to register and track devices

Absolutely! And in the case you mention, it may be traced to the purchaser, but likely it could be traced back to the seller (thief) as well.

Yes, it can be traced if there's a tracking app like find my iphone or ikeymonitor on it.

  • Why do people with iphones also have ipods? A lot of people I know have iphones. But they also have ipod touches. Why? If you have an iphone (which is the exact same thing as an ipod touch plus calling capability) where is the need for an ipod touch? Just doesn't make sense to me.
  • Why do people put passcodes on their iPods or iPhones? My girlfriend has an iPod touch and my friends daughter has an iPhone and they put passcodes on them. I have an iPhone and I don't need one on mine. My friends daughter has a little brother and I understand that's why she has it on hers but my girlfriend doesn't have any brothers or sisters so there's so reason for her to have it on her iPod. I don't get why they put them on there. Why do they have passcodes on their iPods and iPhone?
  • Why do people put passcodes on their iPods and iPhones? My boyfriend has the iPhone 5 and he has a passcode on it. I have an iPod touch and I put a passcode on it I don't really have much on there but I just did it because he did. I know his password but he doesn't care. He lets me use it sometimes. Why does he have a passcode on it?
  • Why do people jail break their iPods/iphones? So I hear all this stuff about jail breaking iPods and iPhones and stuff. How do you do it? And what is the point… I'm confused.
