Can you use an unlocked iphone4 on Virgin Mobile?

I use Virgin Mobile (and love it!) I just noticed that they are carrying the iphone 4 now! I have the Optimus Elite, and want the iphone 4. But I don't want to pay $350 for one. Can I purchase an Unlocked iphone and call virgin mobile or go online and switch my number and plan to the iphone? Or would they know that I did not purchase it from them? How do you even know if an iphone is unlocked? When meeting to purchase from someone?

Added (1). Two totally polar opposite answers! I don't see how ONLY VM phones will work with VM. Because VM can't go into the iphone and add or change anything, hence it is owned by apple. So if one is unlocked, it isn't linked to any carrier.

No, you can't use an unlocked phone on Virgin Mobile. "Unlocked" means the phone will take any sim card. Now, look at you VM phone, and try to find a sim card slot under the battery. I bet you won't find it. And you know why? Because VM uses CDMA technology, where no sim card is needed.
And now you can answer your question yourself.So, can you use a sim card phone on VM if these phones are not compatible with VM?

I've tried a few times and it just keeps saying no service after searching, I've kept trying and once it actually showed virgin mobile with bars and Lte for less than a min but than it went to no service. This is originally a gsm phone but has been unlocked and many other people who unlocked their AT&T or t mobile iPhones were able to use it on a cdma network but why am I struggling. Any help would be much appreciated
