Does it cost to send a text from an iPhone to an iPod in a other country?

So I have an iPhone with sprint and my cousin in Mexico has an iPod if I were to send him a text would it charge me for sending texts to him?

As long as it's iMessage (messages are blue) it will be sent over the Internet and won't cost anything.

If you use viber then know it will be free. And with viber all you do is put in a number and then you can send, But the ipod has to have Wi-Fi for this to be possible

If your connected to the Internet it's free.
If your connected to 3/4G is will cost what the carrier your with charges for message

I have a iphone and so does my boyfriend and he's been in jamaica for the past few days and I've been sending him texts throughout the day just cause I miss him, but would that cost him extra money even though it's sending as a text message and not an imessage?
