Does the netgear Wireless-N 300 router with DSL Modem needs another router?

I don't have cable or DSL but I wanted to wi-if in my home for my iphone and laptop without buying cable and etc. I saw this netgear model at Walmart's website and saw it said "with DSL modem". I wanted to know before buying if I still need some other modem or is the netgear enough?

Netgear manufactures routers, they do not provide Internet access.

Here is how it works,

A wireless router connects two separate networks and manages the traffic between them.

In most home network applications the router connects your local group of computers and devices known as the LAN with the Internet, commonly called the WAN or Wide Area Network.

The Internet is a Wide Area Network or WAN. To connect to the Internet you need a WAN connection from an ISP. (Comcast, Verizon, AT&T, etc.),

Without a ISP to provide the WAN connection, your home network devices can share files and resources via the router's LAN connections, but won't be able to access the Internet.

If you want Internet access, you'll need a Internet plan from a ISP and a broadband modem or gateway (combo modem/router) to provide a connection to the ISP.

That being said,

the Netgear Wireless-N 300 router with DSL Modem is a DSL gateway. You would need an active DSL ISP account, in order to get Internet access.

BEFORE YOU BUY ANYTHING:

Check with your local Internet provider, many provide a free gateway or include the necessary equipment in the monthly service cost.

The type of router you saw has a DSL modem built in that would take the internet connection you get from your DSL provider and broadcast it to all the wireless devices in your house. A wireless router is useless if it is not broadcasting an internet connection for your needs. I guess what I'm getting at is that unless you are going to subscribe to an internet provider then don't get a modem or wireless router.

Wait so are you getting cable or DSL later? Just for clarification a router does not provide Internet access, it simply connects multiple devices TO that connection provided by an Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Depending on the type of Internet service you may need a modem that works for THAT (cable DOCSIS 3 is newest), this router is strictly for DSL/ADSL which is a legacy technology, you really only use it if cable isn't an option.

If it was me personally I would try to avoid this approach though, your Internet provider will give you a modem or modem/router combo unit that works with their network when you sign up, if it's a combo unit I would either stick with just that or get them to disable the routing functions (bridge mode) and turn it into just a modem.

This is what I would use with it:

The N300 is kind of bad IMO, 95% of consumer routers are really. Ubiquiti is mostly an enterprise company so the AirRouter is actually pretty decent, and since they are mostly an wireless access point company (Wi-Fi) it has pretty good range too.

Hope this helps,
Cheers

It depends if you are using a ADSL connection then this modem router shall be fine. All you need to make sure that your new router should be a N wireless router for better internet and wireless LAN speed and in this way this stand alone device shall fulfill your purpose.
