How to communicate while I'm out of the country?

I'm going to the Dominican Republic and I have never traveled out of the country before. Can I use an app on my iPhone to communicate to the US? How does that work? Or can I email? I have no idea how to do it lol I wanna be able to talk to my boyfriend while I'm gone but I don't know how I can do it. Can I use skype? Will my phone work there? Or just with Wi-Fi? I have no clue how any of this works!

Probably just internet. If you have internet youll be able to do those. Not sure if the internet speed in the Dominican republic is fast enough for video chat, but it should be enough for voice chat.

about using phones. I highly suggest you do not use your old phone sim card.

also make sure to use the country code you are calling.
e.g back in my country, i only need to dial 012XXXXXXX, but i'm out of my country now so i have to dial +6012XXXXXXX. Because my county code is +60.im assuming youre from the US. So get your country code and change all your contact list to numbers including the country code

because if you keep using your old simcard you will be using roaming services which costs a lot more. And not just the caller has to pay. Even the receiver has to pay. You can find a lot of packages, maybe free smses or free internet or a certain amount of free international calls.

whatever it is, good luck and stay safe abroad. Because youre a girl, going to a foreign place, always be wary of your surroundings. And don't trust people so easily.

That is not a problem.

Before you go, call your cell phone provider and pre-pay a package.

For $ 60 you will typically get about 50 min and 150 SMS messages. Beyond that, you will pay ~$ 1.00 per minute on the phone and $ 0.75 per message, coming or going.

Now, be smart and install www.skype.com app on your phone. It only works on Wi-Fi. Use your credit card and pre-pay $ 10.00 to skype. Now you can call any telephone in the Western world for ~2.0 cent/min. Compare that to $ 1.00 /min. Which do you prefer?

If he has skype in his telephone as well, you can talk for nothing, for as long as you wish. You both have to use Wi-Fi for the "free" calls, though.

As far as your boyfirend calling you. He calls your normal at-home number and your phone will ring. Now you pay $ 1.00 per min. Tell him "We can't talk, I will call you back".

Then find the nearest Wi-Fi spot and call his number, using your skype app. Now you talk for 2 c/min.

Better.

Enjoy your trip.

Ask your provider for a package.

  • Will T-Mobile charge me extra for texting out of the country? One of my friends is in Egypt. She texted me last night and I hesitated to reply because I was afraid that they would charge me like $20 since its Egypt. I ended up replying once and now i'm afraid. My mom will kill me if they charge a lot. However, I have unlimited texting and she texted me from an app which is from the iphone i think… Will they charge me?
  • Will I still be charged out if country for this? So I'm in Mexico right now and I don't want sprint to charge me for internet or anything. I have it on airplane mode and turned off cellular data in the settings. I'm running on Wi-Fi so that's how I get on here. Am I good or is there still a chance I can be charged? I have sprint and an iPhone 5s if that helps.
  • When in a contract, can I get a different SIM while in another country? I'm going to china in 15 days and I want an IPhone so I can take pictures and have data while I'm there. I'm staying for an entire month. Getting this IPhone (with either sprint or T-mobile) with put me in a 2 year contract. Will I be able to use my phone while I'm there with the new SIM card I'm buying in China. I heard that my phone will be locked while I'm out of the country or something.
  • What is the information that I need to know about using my AT&T iPhone out of the country? I have AT&T. I have an iPhone. I'm going to Cabo San Lucas through July 1st-July 5th. I want to use my cell phone to take pictures and post Facebook/Instagram updates, without getting charged for international rates. Suggestions? Like turning off data or using Wi-Fi or using airplane mode.
