If the iPhone is as capable as any Android phone, then you can use the USB cable to back it up directly.Otherwise you have to take the long and more complicated way of getting a wireless router, making sure your computer is on that network and then connecting the phone to your wireless network. You would also have to encrypt it to keep Wi-Fi leachers and hackers off your computer.
You need a wireless router.
Do you have iTunes installed on the computer? That is what we used to back up a coworker's iPhone when its Wi-Fi failed and we needed to transfer everything to a warranty replacement phone.
Thanks, my usb cable is plugged in, but the problem is "back-up now" is greyed out and it stills says I must be connected to Wi-Fi.
Download the latest version if iTunes.
Uncheck backup to the cloud so you can backup to a local computer and see if it will allow a USB connection. Also head over to apple support may be useful
