How to unlock my iphone 5 carrier?

My uncle just gifted me an iphone 5 and he bought it in france. Bringing it in Mauritius(where I live) and when I put my sim card in it, it can't be activated and shows me the following message:
"The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.
The SIM card that you currently have installed in this iPhone is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy that is currently assigned by the activation server. This is not a hardware issue with the iPhone. Please insert another SIM card from a supported carrier or request that this iPhone be unlocked by your carrier. Please contact Apple for more information."

This is actually annoying and I need help As soon as possible… Thank you in advance <3

You can unlock your iPhone's carrier after you do jailbreak on it. I found a software on the web that allows you to jailbreak your phone, there's also an explanation that comes with the software as to how it is used.

My Iphone 4 is currently running on ios 4.3.3 and I wish to update it to the new os (the ios 6), but don't want to lose its carrier unlock. I don't actually know if its an official factory unlock or what but what I know is that the Iphone is not jailbreaked (So If I assume right, Is it really a factory unlock and won't be affected by any update?).
