Why would you hate iTunes? YOU are in control - unless you do not know what you are doing. As long as you have a computer that is no ancient and can handle iTunes, just use it - free, powerful, and universal.
As far as books - we get a lot from out local library system, and they use Overdrive.
To make a long story short, try iTunes again. Would make life a whole lot easier for yourself.
ITube is hands down awesome. I think you should check it out, it your iOS is updated enough.

- Transferring MP3 to iTunes, MP3 not working? I downloaded 40 MP3s in my computer and as usual, I drag them to iTunes so I can connect it to my iPhone. But only 4 were able to transfer.
