If I get my iPhone unlocked can I put an international sim card in it?

I'm studying abroad and I'm trying to figure out the cheapest way to use a cell phone while I'm in France. I don't need to have a smartphone while I'm there but I'd like to avoid purchasing a new phone if possible. Right now I have an iPhone and I heard that at&t is allowing customers to unlock their phones now. If I got my phone unlocked through at&t, would I be able to put an international sim card into it and use it under a plan provided by a french carrier?

Yes, however AT&T has put restrictions on unlocking. You can read about them here:

As of the 25th of January, it was made illegal to unlock iPhones purchased at that time. So, I would suggest that you do not since it could now be a legal issue and you could get fined by the company or something.

Yeah I have friends from India that put local sim cards in their iphone when they go back, so it can be done for sure.

If you are flying from US to France and needs to talk with people in US, then you should take an international sim card with you. It ll be cheaper to use it rather than taking that at&t connection. That ll be good only for domestic use, but again outgoing calls will be costly.

You don't need to purchase a new phone. You can unlock your existing phone and use it anywhere in the world. Regarding the legality of this, if you purchased the phone before the 26th of January 2013 then you can unlock your phone legally. The new DMCA law says phones purchased after this date can't be locked without the permission of the network it's locked to.

Now to unlock your phone you can use an online service like https://www.unlockhandset.com/

Use the following direct link for AT&T iPhone: https://www.unlockhandset.com/iPhone/United-States/ATT/

That site also has the instructions you will need.

  • Using an international SIM card for an iPhone? I'm studying abroad in the fall for almost 4 months and will be putting my phone to "sleep" at a cost of $10 a month here In the states. I want to buy an international SIM card for when I arrive in Italy so that I don't have to put a new phone in Italy. Does anyone know the cost and what is included in buying an international SIM card. The fee in mins, where can I call, texts, Internet, can I still use Wi-Fi? Serious answers only.
  • International SIM card for iPhone 5? I know my network would still work when I'm out of the country, but because I'm traveling to London next month, would I purchase an international sim over there to avoid extra charges? If so where would I purchase one and do they install it into my iPhone 5? I have tmobile by the way.
  • If i buy an unlocked iPhone, can I put any SIM Card in it? I want to buy an unlocked iPhone 4. I watched a video and you need to put a SIM card in to use it I think. Can I just buy like a Straight Talk SIM and just put it in the slot, and will it work? I'm not too good at understanding this stuff and it would help if someone told me.
  • How to use an old iphone with international sim card? I'm going to be studying abroad in Ireland from January through May of this year. I just got a new iphone 8 last week and I still have my old iphone 6. I was planning on keeping my iphone 6 so I can use an international sim to get phone calls, data, etc. Since I've already activated my new phone and taken my old phone off the account, will I need to call verizon and have them unlock my old one(iphone 6)?
