Android on the whole is more popular simply because there are more manufacturers making them vs only Apple that makes the iPhone, but as far as which is better in the long run, the iPhone. No. Androids vastly outsell iPhones.
Maybe the question is whether they're more desirable than Androids? I don't know the answer to that but I know a lot of people buy Androids because they can't afford the iPhone model they might otherwise prefer. But I also know a lot of Android owners who'd never buy an iPhone and quite a few Windows and Blackberry devotees as well. Probably not, Android phones are created by different companies like LG, samsung, Motorola, Nexus and many more, there are many more variants to android phones than the iPhone lineup, so it only makes sense that because of the many budget friendly choices people have that Android would outsell iPhone. In developed countries, yes. In the countries like korea, china, etc, no. There's many definitions of "popular" in this scenario.
In the case of popularity by gossip (people talking about iPhones), the iPhone is certainly more popular, because you don't hear people often talk about "Hey the new Nexus is out!".
