The nexus 4 is out of this debate because you are dealing with premium phones here which are also premiumly prices. The nexus 4 is great value for someone on a budget but if you want to go premium you gotta pay premium.
In my humble opinion I would say the S3 anyday but considering am not the one getting the phone I'll try to look at things a bit differently. The iphone is a simple phone that gets the job done quickly and efficiently with no more and no less. Whereas the S3 is more of a media consumption device and a productivity device, it's packed with a lot more features and therefore is a automatically a little bit more complicated but nothing out of this world.
The s3 is also fast and good with games and the case is the same with the iphone, the S3 screen is also bigger and therefore makes for a better media consumption device.
The main reason to pick the s3 over the iphone 5 is the screen and the features for example NFC which you just can't get on any iphone and the main reason to pick the iphone over the s3 is simplicity, you pick it out of the box and it just works.
IPhone 5 the galaxy s3 is already replaced by the S4 and its only dual core. The Nexus 4 is great but it's like the Android equivalent to the iPhone 5
Nexus 4: exelent performance, a sharp display, regular battery save, moderated screen size, a 5mp camera (front and back), latest android OS and a low price.
If you are not considering the S4, I would say the S3.iPhones are really outdated technology and they will continue to be.
Why not Samsung Galaxy S4?
Definitely iPhone 5! But I think Samsung Galaxy S4 is a good choice for you, too.

The Galaxy S III & Nexus 4 both run Android which is not as good an OS as iOS. Fragmentation happens (not as bad on the Nexus 4 though), battery life is usually worse, security, etc.
In terms of the Galaxy S III alone, its performance is worse than the iPhone 5's
In terms of the Nexus 4 alone, it does not support LTE, which the iPhone 5 does
