Updating a jailbroken iPhone?

I recently jailbroke my iPhone 4s on ios 7.1.2. I have new apps, tweaks, themes etc. That i've now installed. I was just wondered, if I need to update my phone again to new software, will the update wipe the jailbreak? Or wipe the tweaks i've installed etc?

Any iOS update will remove your jailbreak. Never update the jb iPhone directly. You need to restore in iTunes and then update the iOS.

As a long time member of the jailbreak community I try to stay on the firmware I have as long as I can. Always wait until a jailbreak for the new OS is released before updating.

When backing up you can always look into jailbreak tools that do it for you. You can find several by doing a quick google search.

What I do is manually back up everything I feel is essential through SSH using iFunbox. I usually keep Photos, Themes, SMS.db, AppStore App's documents, and other essentials. (You could also do an iTunes back up but I usually don't) Then I restore using iTunes. RESTORE. Not update. RESTORE. Then I immediately rejailbreak. Once rejailbroken, I install all the tweaks I liked.

Doing this is a bit time consuming but is best for avoiding compatibility issues and also cleans up unused tweaks and is kind of a fresh start. Just remember all the must have tweaks.

Hope I helped

  • Will updating (to 6.1.4) a jailbroken iPhone 5 on 6.1.2 brick it? So I'm updating to the beta version of ios 7, but first I need to uninstall my Evasi0n jailbreak and update to 6.1.4. Will just pressing the update button in iTunes brick my iPhone, or will I just loose the jailbreak? If this will brick it, what is the best way to go about restoring my iPhone?
  • Will updating my iPhone apps affect my phone speed as how updating the Operating System (OS) will? Currently I'm using the iPhone 5s on iOS 8.3 I know if I were to update my phone to the latest OS I may notice some slowdown on my phone's performance, since it may not have the "muscle" to handle certain functions. Many apps now are optimised for iOS 9 and/or the 6th generation phones. Will my 5s' speed performance slow down if I update my apps? Will the app's performance slow down?

  • What is the difference between updating your iphone on iTunes or in your iphone? So I'm trying to update my iPhone 4S and I don't have enough storage so I've heard that you can update it on iTunes. What I don't get is what difference does it make downloading it from iTunes or from your iphone directly
