What is the origin of the U. F. O. Noise?

I'm talking about the stereotypical U. F.O. Noise, like the one from the iPhone ringtone.
Did it come from the intro to Doctor Who or some movie?

You mean the hi pitched whistle? Maybe it comes from the spielberg ET movie, althought l don't remember quite clearly

The whistle tone going up and down? It was in the 1956 film Earth Versus the Flying Saucers. However the sound was included in the music of a previous film, The Day the Earth Stood Still (the 1951 version). If you watch the trailer you will hear it quite clearly when the 'Alien' steps down.

  • Why is my iPhone making a buzzing noise? Whenever I play music or any sound is made on my iPhone 4s (which I have only had a couple weeks) it sounds like the speakers are sort of buzzing. Like the music isn't clear. It sounds like if you were listening to the radio but it wasn't tuned properly. What could be wrong and how can I fix it?
  • Why does my iphone 5 home button feel loose and make noise? My iPhone 5 home button feels loose and only after 2 weeks i've never dropped and i don't push the button down hard at all please help me solve this or should i just take it to apple?
  • What causes the rattling noise in the new iPhone 5 and is it bad it makes this noise? Near the proximity sensor when i shake the phone back and forth something inside rattles and it is beginning to concern me.
  • My iPhone keeps making a funny noise? It's sort of lile a 'ping' sound effect, and it happens about 2-3 times a day but its never at the same times. Some days it doesn't even make the noise (RELIEF! Lol) It's so random, and I'm always terrified when it happens. I think it's trying to tell me it's overheatin or something, so I've sent it to my local Apple expert. I just want to know what other people think of it before I get it back.
