What's better, buying an iphone outright? Or being on a plan?

Added (1). Being on a plan means you're already paying to use all the features, but buying it outright means you still need to get a provided for services and what-not

Added (2). *provider

Plan is better.
you will still need a plan even if you buy outright.

I believe a contract with a free (or deeply discounted) phone is the way to go. The benefits are that you get a free phone (or at least a really good price) and you can upgrade later on and trade up for a brand new phone. Can't do that with a phone you bought yourself!

You need to pay for phone service whether you have your own phone or buy one with a contract. Having a contract also helps you establish good credit if you pay your bills on time.

The only time I would buy a phone outright is if I got an incredibly good deal on it because it was used or refurbished, or if I wasn't planning to use the phone for very long because I was planing to move to another country, etc. And didn't want to be caught up in a contract.
