Where do deleted photos go on camera roll on my iPhone?

So, what if you take a picture on camera roll and delete right away, can anyone ever access it? Is it gone for good? Does it take an amount of time for it to be gone?

Actually the word "delete" is a misnomer. What happens is the file remains so with the right software it can possibly retrieved. In this case delete actually means it can be written over. When that happens the original is no longer there.

I've found that even formatting the card doesn't take everything off of the card but allows that space to be written over so yes, someone could get those deleted photos with the right recover software.

Bottom line, at least in my experience, the only sure way to actually get rid of all the data is to destroy the card - break it in half or burn it.

  • Will my iPhone camera roll be deleted if I sync it to a new computer? I just got a new laptop & am wanting to sync my iPhone to it, but my phone is currently synced with my current laptop. I'm just wondering, what will happen to my camera roll, contacts etc if I synced it to the new laptop. Must I back it up first before doing anything?
  • Why does my iphone no longer save photos to my camera roll? Ever since I had updated my phone to ios 6, i noticed that it no longer saved photos to my camera roll. If I take a picture on Instagram, it will not automatically save it to my camera roll as it used to do, nor does it save any image I want to save from Facebook. It will, however, still save a photo that I take from the phone's camera. It somehow only won't save photos when it is taken through another app or from another source. What can I do to fix this?
