Why does my iPhone 5 battery drain so fast when not in use?

I've had my iPhone 5 for about 7 months and when I go to sleep I usually power it fully off because once I didn't and it lost 20%. However, that time I had left Wi-Fi, 3G and all of those other things on, since it was when I had just gotten my phone and didn't know about it. However, one time I was talking to my friend who has an iPhone 4 and she said that she doesn't power her phone off when she goes to sleep and it only loses about 3% battery. So this time I tried not powering it off. I turned Wi-Fi off, I put my phone in 'do not disturb' mode and I got rid of all of the multitasking things. When I went to sleep, it was on 95%. When I woke up, it was on 83%. My phone had lost TWELVE PERCENT OVERNIGHT. I didn't use it AT ALL. No one called or texted me and my phone still lost a significant amount of battery. Do you know why? Or if something's wrong with my phone?

There's 2 things that could be wrong.
1) Battery is defective (if you want to find out if it's defective or not, schedule a meeting at the Genius Bar at the nearest Apple Store & they'll run diagnostics on your battery)
2) You have too much things going on in the background.

An easy thing to do to kill all of the things running in the background, is to open up multi-tasking by double clicking the home button and clearing all of the apps in the multitasking bar.

Also, turn off things you don't use, such as GPS, Location Services, LTE (if you are in a bad coverage area for LTE, this will help). Also, make sure to turn off "Fetch New Data" if you use mail. To go this, go to settings--> Mail, Contacts, Calendars, then turn it off. That uses both data and battery life by constantly running data to and from your iPhone.
If you use Facebook, there's a known bug that causes the app to run in the background when the app isn't even launched. Deleting Facebook and using your Safari browser for Facebook is the best thing to do battery-wise. Turning off sounds, like keyboard clicks, also can help battery life. If these techniques aren't helping, do a full restore on your iPhone. Make sure to backup your stuff before doing the restore, so you don't lose anything.
Hope I helped!

  • Why does my iPhone battery drain so quick? I took my phone off the charger at about 9:30am, it's now 10:01am and it was on 100%, I hardly used it, I only went on Facebook to check the newsfeed and reply to an inbox and now it's on 87%? I was watching it go down and it goes down 1% roughly every 2 minutes. It's been happening for about a week now and I'm lucky if my phone lasts me half a day. What can I do (WITHOUT BUYING A NEW PHONE)
  • Why does my iphone 5s battery power drain so fast recently? So within the last 2 weeks I've been noticing that my battery power has been going down a lot faster than it normally did. In the past 5 minutes it went down by 5% and seems to be draining even when I turn it off. I haven't updated it at all and have only had it for 4 months. Does anybody know what's wrong?
