Why does non-mainstream music get so much hate?

I noticed that any music that isn't mainstream seems to attract a lot of hate. For example I was at the gym and put on some jungle/drum and bass and one of my friends told me to turn it off as it was "just noise". Surprisingly *sarcasm* all the music on his iPhone was Kanye West et al.

Why does non-mainstream music get so much hate? I like music from all genres and I notice that, although all non-mainstream attracts a lot of hate, heavier EDM and types of metal probably attracts the most. Why is this? Are people afraid to listen to music that's alien to their ears or society deems bad?

Personally, I think it's because people are too lazy to give any other music type a chance. They hear something that is "non-mainstream" and it takes too much thought to really listen and appreciate it. People nowadays are just mindlessly finding the music that is easiest to find and listen to that because they don't want to go out and discover different music. It's too much work for them.

But this is only my opinion. I could be wrong.

Lol wtf are you talking about if anything non mainstream is glorified. But people rather pirate a non mainstream artists' music rather than give them money so they can go on tours and therefore spread their music.

Jungle/dnb is the best imo but people prefer dubstep

Ehh mainstream is the concept of doing what is big, it doesn't mean popular… I listen to hip-hop so I'ma give a hip-hop related example, if some self proclaimed "underground rapper" is rapping about money, weed and women… Well he IS mainstream and awful. He doesn't have to be famous to be mainstream. Mainstream is following trends.

With the being said I know people who hate on deeper music and political hip-hop. Most of them can't relate or are sheep and think it's "not cool enough" and they only listen to mainstream.

But yo I notice mainstream (and rightfully so) get's a lot more hate.
