Why is my voice when I record it sound awful?

Hi, I like singing alone, especially in bathroom. For me I sound really good, I'm a shy guy so I don't really sing in front of others but when I was a kid I used to sing at karaokes and my dad said I had really good voice. But for some reason, today I don't like doing that anymore.

So yeah, my problem is, when I sing I can hear myself and I sound good but when I sing recorded by my iPhone 4 (if that helps) I'm out of tune, pale voice, and I sound really deep. Why? Is it because the mic is s**it? But when I sing and listen to my voice it doesn't!

Is that normal?

Reality check: we sound different from what we think we sound like. When we hear ourselves, that isn't exactly how we ACTUALLY sound like. But also, in your case, there might also be some problems with the mic-- also, perhaps there are other factors that made your recorded voice like that [perhaps the wind or some other noise in the background].

You might want to try another recording device and record your voice in some place quiet in which your voice wouldn't echo much (since that also affects). If the same thing happens, then probably that is just how your voice sounds like.

No one actually knows what they sound like, singing or talking. The only way to know what you sound like is to record your voice and play it back or to use an amplifier and headphones.

It probably doesn't, everyone thinks they're voices sound bad while listening to it (I can't stand mine, but I still go do rap battles etc.)

  • Why is the iPhone 5s battery so awful? Just got brand new 5s yesterday. Immediately turned off all of the battery-hogging features (LTE, location services, notifications, app refresh, spotlight, airdrop). I don't hav any music or videos on here. All I used was safari and email. But the battery drains before my eyes. What the hell? Even my 4-year old iPhone 4 lasted longer. What gives?
  • Why does my Voice Sound Different When It's Recorded? Its so f"ckin worse when record via iphone or audacity. But when i singing on Mic my sound is very good
  • Why does my voice sound different on a Blue Snowball vs an IPhone built-in microphone? My voice on the iPhone mic sounds more light and agile, but on the Blue Snowball it sounds deep and heavy. I haven't adjusted settings for the Snowball yet, but should I? Is the iPhone mic true enough to trust as my standard?
  • Why does my singing voice sound so different when recorded? When I sing on the voice memo thing on my iPhone my voice sounds kinda odd. It doesn't really sound that good. When I sing out load or on a microphone my voice sounds really good. Like, I just downloaded a microphone app and when I sang into it I can hear my voice live And it sounded good. Why does it sound different when I record it on my iPhone? It's not off pitch or anything it just seems weird and less "singy" I can't really explain it.
