Activating Used IPhone

Hi, I brought an iphone 5 and it belonged to someone else. I have never had a phone b4, how do I get a number and make it mine? I'm guessing I need to buy nano sim? Where can I get one in new Zealand, and just how do I do everything, I have no idea, thanks.

To start with, yes. IPhone 5's use a Nano SIM.

When you say "how do I get a number and make it mine?" do you mean the number which a person has to dial in order to call your phone? If so, then you need a new SIM card.

Each SIM card has its own number. I live in the UK, but you need to look at the SIM card which you currently have to see what network it's on. That way, you know where to get a new SIM from. It's best if you go onto the networks website of they have one, because you can always get a free SIM card from them.

Don't forget though, you have to check on what network the current SIM card is from. And you also should find out if the phone is SIM free or not.

A SIM free phone means that the phone can be used on any network which the user desires.

If it's not SIM free however, it means that the phone is tied to one network, and you would have to have a Nano SIM from that provider. You can however, have a phone unlocked, which means if it is tied to one network, you can pay a small fee to make it possible to use any network you wish, providing you have the right SIM card.

Let me give you an Example… Over here in the UK, we have many networks such as EE (formerly known as Orange), Vodafone, O2, 3, Virgin, Lebara, Giffgaff. I have a phone which is SIM free. I used to be on Vodafone, but I moved to Giffgaff. All I had to do was swap the SIM card without any worries.

If your phone is SIM free, it's best to check every network you can, as some a cheaper & better than others.

Hope this has helped you in some way.

  • Why isn't my iphone 3GS activating? Ok, so my iPhone 3GS was unlocked on 5.1.1, and it was jailbroken. I wanted to factory unlock it, so it will be 6.0.1 and still unlock. When the people said my unlock was ready, they told me to update it to 6.0.1. When I tried setting it up and activate it, it won't work. It says we're unable to continue with your activation at this time. Any help would be appreciated.
  • Verizon iPhone 5 not activating? I received my new iPhone 5 today and it keeps saying that it isn't activating and to call the Verizon customer support number if the problem persists. Unfortunately it is after business hours and I can't call them until tomorrow. Is there anything that I can do to activate it now? I've set up the iPhone and backed it up and turned off my other activated phone that this one is replacing and it is still not activating. Any ideas?
