Am I Being Scammed By Selling My iPhone?

So i'm in the middle of arranging to meet somebody off the internet to sell them my iphone. I have told the person I will meet them at a local cafe and they can of course play on the phone etc before they decide to purchase it from me, so to make sure that they are satisfied. HOWEVER, this person is asking me to bring ID with me for them to take a copy of when I meet them? THIS SEEMS VERY STRANGE TO ME. Why would they need this? I really do not feel comfortable giving my details to a stranger. Is this normal for somebody to ask for when buying off the internet, or am I right to be a bit weary?

If you are uncomfortable, don't sell to them. There are many other non-suspicious buyers who will want to buy your iPhone! Trust me: D

They don't need your ID that's really fruity. Demand cash in bills no larger then 20s and get a pen a staples that can detect counterfeit money. And no showing of ID. And make the deal inside a business and NEVER get in their car.

This does sound odd.

Maybe they want your id to make sure they have your info if something goes wrong with the phone later. But its a cash sale. So if they pay and leave with your phone it should be a done deal.

If you do not feel right about this arraingment then don't do it. Your better off selling on ebay, through paypal. I'd do it that way instead.

Don't give any details to him. You're there to sell the phone and that's it. And if he doesn't want to cooperate with you then offer the phone to someone else.

They want your ID so if the phone turns out to be stolen they can show who they purchased the phone from, and know how to contact you.

Caution is on both sides of a sale, remember, get their ID too. We're too paranoid, there's no harm in knowing to whom you're selling something, and it protects you to know from whom you're buying.

You're not providing anything that will allow identity theft, only your name and address for contact.

Media reports make it sound like identity theft is rampant and insidious, it isn't. Just be normally conscientious.

Because 90% of iPhones sold on sites like Gumtree, Craigslist, Kijiji, etc are stolen he needs a copy of your ID in case he goes to set up an account and can't because the phone was reported stolen. This happens every day -- just read through these boards to see how many people have bought used iPhones from private sellers only to find out they were stolen when they tried to activate them.
I would never buy a used phone from anyone without seeing and taking note of their ID
