How to write a satire paper?
These are the directions my English II (high school) teacher gave me:
Satire Writing:
Please type (at least) one half page about something you would change to make our world ideal using satire.
Please include why subject is important.
Make your point clear!
**Remember: Satire has a point. It's not just sarcasm!**
I don't understand how to write a satire though. She showed us a video about the Iphone 6 using satire and the person over exaggerated on the phone, but I don't know how I could use satire in say a cereal product for example. If someone could give me a little inspiration it would be greatly appreciated.
The most famous satirical essay is "A Modest Proposal," by Jonathan Swift.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/...t_Proposal
The essay is written as if it is meant to be taken seriously. It recommends that the poor remedy their poverty by selling their children to the rich who will then cook and eat the children for food. Of course, Swift's REAL meaning in the essay was to take a swipe at the way the rich were cruelly indifferent to the plight of the poor. But the essay never says that. On its surface, it seems like a serious, sincere proposal that the poor sell their children to be killed and eaten. That's what makes it "satire." The essay seems to be serious and sincere about what it is saying, but everybody (or anyone with brains) can tell that something different is really meant. It is an indirect and roundabout way of attacking someone. And people find humor and amusement in the cleverness of the saying one thing while meaning the opposite.
In our world of today, some people complain that poor people are too lazy, and that's why they are poor. In your essay, you could pretend to agree with this point of view, and, as your proposed remedy, you could propose that people be trained in school to work hard by having, in the school cafeteria, different menus for A students, B students, C students, D students, and F students. Kids who get low average grades would be served things like tree bark, worms, moldy bread, and dirt. It would teach them to work hard. The key is to write that all with a "straight face," i.e., as a serious proposal.
Well, that idea of mine was not so hot, now that I think of it. Hopefully you can think of a better one.
