Best way to use Internet on iphone in Japan?

I will be traveling to Japan for 3 weeks in March. Been there before and know how difficult it is to find Wi-Fi (McDonald's and Starbucks didn't help). I pretty much depended on hotels and some international bars for Wi-Fi. This time though I would like to use my iphone internet on the go and was wondering if anyone knows the best and affordable way to go about this.

There's no affordable way to use iPhone in wide areas in Japan.

IPhones aren't useful here and will cost a bunch.
You can get prepaid, temporary mobile phones from AU or Docomo stores.
Otherwise your other choice is only the same free wi-fi or internet cafes.

Like the above contributor said, you need to get a new SIM card.
You might be able to get a friend to lend you one while you are here, but they have to already have an iPhone here in Japan.
