Blocking Spam Calls - iPhone?

Every day I get spam calls from phone numbers starting with the same 3 digits as my phone number, but every time the last 4 digits are different.
Is there a way to block all calls that start with a certain set of digits instead of having to block a specific, full phone number?

Most, if not all, of those calls are spoofing the callerID information. Blocking a legitimate number because a spoofed number to getting to your phone could be problematic because you would be blocking the wrong thing.

Using your logic, you would be blocking more than one phone number that did not even make the call - and it is possible that a legit call to you that is in that number range would also be blocked - which you probably don't want to do. For example, lets say you blocked NPA 510 and NXX 555. That means all the legitimate phone numbers from 510-555-0000 through 510-555-9999 would be blocked while the call center spoofing the callerID information was actually calling from phone numbers not in that number range.

There's work underway to require authentication (by the communications service providers) so the source phone numbers and the caller ID information are legit. It is fairly complex stuff, but expect to see more on this in the next year or so.

In the mean time, there are some ways to deal with these calls, now. If you don't recognize the number, don't answer the call - let it go to voice mail. If you use your phone in a way that requires you to answer calls whether you recognize the number or not, then at least be sure to not provide any personal information to the machine or person who called.

Scammers are going to scam. Be careful.

  • Why are there so many spam adverts all of a sudden? In the last couple minutes, loads of those spam ads have appeared around all the websites I'm on, like Facebook, twitter, Google and this website. The ads are like how to lose weight in 5 mins, chat requests, and the games like shooting the iPhone. Happened really suddenly and wanna know if there's a way to get rid of it or if its a virus or something, thanks! Pop-up ads are and have always been disabled!
  • Spam Text Messages - What to do? I just got a few text messages from an unknown email address with a link advertising "Badoo." I have no idea who the email address even belongs to. I have an iPhone, so I could tell the sender sent it to multiple numbers. I deleted the conversation before opening the messages or opening the link. What can I do if this continues to happen? If I did open the messages, could my iPhone get a virus? What could happen if anything?
  • Spam message from twitter opened on iphone, should I be concerned? I received a direct message on twitter that was the usual spam trying to get me to click on a link. Normally I never open these and delete them but thanks to the notifications setting it opened the message directly but thankfully not the link. Should I be concerned of any possible infection from this?
  • Is there an iPhone app for blocking calls and texts? I had an app on my last android phone called 'call blacklist' you could add numbers you didn't want to have text or call you. And if those numbers did, it showed it in a message log on the app. Is there anything like that for the iPhone? I really could use it.
