Buy iphone 4s in america and use it in ireland?

If I bought an iphone 4s in america cause they are so much cheaper over there than here would I be able to unlock it or something so I would be able to use it normally in ireland?

Add up the cost of a phone + 24 months or airtime for Both places
and I think you will find it is very similar

And likewise to buy standalone/SIM free and then add SIM only contract
will also be a similar cost

and remember it costs more to get it unlocked or SIM free.
