Buying an iPhone 5 in America and using it in Australia?

I'm travelling to the States for two months later this year and was wanting to upgrade to an iPhone 5. Just wondering whether I will be able to use an unlocked iPhone from America in Australia when I get back? Is it worth buying one over there and saving some money?

Yes, you can use it, but likely the LTE frequency band won't be compatible. It should work fine with 3G.

The warranty only applies in the US, so any warranty claims must be made in the US.

You won't be saving much if any money. The 5s is $650 for the 16 GB and goes up $100 for each increase in memory. $100 less for the 5c. Add local sales tax of 5-10% on top.

It is possible that you may be required to pay customs/duty and GST upon entering Australia or activation of the phone. Phones are regionalized.
