Can an old Wi-Fi router cause connectivity problems?

It seems I can't keep Wi-Fi connection on any of my devices within my home. We now have one lap top, one iphone, one itouch, one kindle fire requiring connection in my home. My wireless router is about 5 years old. We're having to unplug the router and reset several times a day to get connection to one, maybe two of the devices. At times, the connection will only last several minutes and we're having to reset the router again. Could it be the age of the router and it's capabilities of handling so many devices or should I be trouble shooting something else?

While it is possible, I don't think it's the age of your router, as long as it's working properly still. What is your source for internet (e.g. Cable, FIOS, DSL, Sattelite) When you lose connection, It is more likely that you have to reset the modem and router than just the router. Routers are designed to connect multiple devices. The only thing that might be of concern is support for the newer wireless protocols, especially if you are using wpa2 security. You can try getting a newer router for a week-end and if it doesn't help, return it & look elsewhere. One concern is distance from the source - what signal strenght are you getting with the various devices throughout the house? Check to be sure you have not limited your connections in the router - there's a setting that allows you to do this - make sure it's not limited.

  • What's the difference between a cheap router and a good router? Just wanted to know the difference between a cheap router and an expensive router, I know that is a very broad question, I'm just a bit confused on how a router works. Does it increase my Internet speed on multiple devices? I get 50Mb per second, Well at least that's what I pay for. I have a PS3 two iPhones and a tablet, as well as a desktop PC that is wireless. Can anyone recommend an excellent router under $150
