Can I activate an old iPhone as a basic phone?

I have an out of service iPhone but right now I'm using a basic phone. Can I activate the old iPhone as a basic phone and just not use that data part of it? I only want it to text/call and I like the iPhone better then the basic phone I have now but I do not want to pay for a data plan.

Thanks!

If you could look at my other questions too that would be great!

No, cell phone companies require you to purchase a minimum plan, which for smart phones usually involves paying for a data plan as well.

No you can't. Iphones are constantly using and streaming data no matter what you do, so a data plan is necessary.

  • What if I put a basic phone sim card to an unlocked iPhone? I have a basic phone which can only call (I pay about $10 a month for this). But now I have an unlocked iPhone 5s, which I use for music. So I thought, why not put the sim card in the iPhone so I don't have to carry 2 phones. I DON'T want to have to pay for data. So, if I put the "basic phone" sim card in the iPhone, will it automatically charge me for the monthly data? Like $40-80 a month? (AT&T)
  • What does it mean to be basic? Like a basic white girl? If someone was a "basic white girl" or "basic," what do they do, or how do they act?
  • Switching to a basic phone from an iPhone? Long story short, I broke my iPhone 5c. It was still under the 1 year warranty, so Apple is going to replace it. However, they didn't have any in stock at my local Apple Store, but they were going to get a shipment in 3-4 days. I still have an old basic flip phone, so would I be able to switch to that for the next 3 days and then switch back to my iPhone? Would my Verizon data plan affect this at all?
  • Switch my Verizon Basic phone to iPhone? Ok so I have an LG Cosmos through Verizon wireless. I really want an iPhone but they won't let me get one without the expensive Data Plan. My question is can I buy an iPhone online, and call the Verizon number and have them activate it with my number? Ya know like transfer my number to the new phone, to get around paying for the stupid plan. Using the iPhone kind of like an iPod that makes calls?
