Can I connect my iPhone 4s to any carrier?

I recently bought my iPhone 4s from my friend. He had purchased it from the Apple Store. He had connected it to verizon. And I was just wondering if I could connect it to Virgin and if so how much would they charge?

If he bought it from Apple than it should be unlocked. If its not unlocked you would have to jailbreak it. And i don't think Virgin has an activation fee. You would just need an airtime card and call them and activate it.

No they will not charge if it is without Verizon plans.

It needs to be unlocked. The best way to find out if it's unlocked is to put in a sim card from another carrier. If it works then it is unlocked. If not then you will need to have it unlocked. This can be done by purchasing an unlock code from a site like cellunlocker.net Virgin will charge a $5 sim card fee but there shouldn't be an activation fee. If you go to your nearest virgin retailer they will be able to activate it on their network for you.

The best way to know for sure is for you to remove the sim card and insert a sim card from a different carrier. If it works, then you have your answers for sure.

If you bought the iPhone 4s from an Apple store, I strongly believe that it is unlocked (which means can work with sim cards from any carrier).it is nothing to do with 'jailbreak' because that's a whole different issue.

The good news is that most newer iPhones from Verizon are not factory locked as announced few years ago.

But if you are one of the unlucky ones who bought their iPhone factory-locked, Verizon offers an easy and free way to unlock your iPhone. By calling their hot numbers.see the links below for more details and conditions.
