Can I use an old Verizon iPhone 5C with MetroPCS?

I have an old iPhone 5C that is from Verizon. The contract is up and it is no longer on our plan. I want to give the phone to my friend and she uses MetroPCS.
I have been having a hard time figuring out how this will work and I need it explained in terms that I can understand (a lot of the stuff I have read has been too complicated for me to understand). From what I have read it shows that I can purchase a MetroPCS sim card and put it in the iPhone. Will this make it work with Metro? I want to give it to her for her to start a new plan with them with the phone. The iPhone was not unlocked when I bought it. Will this be possible? Basically I need these answers:
1. Can an old Verizon phone be used with MetroPCS?
2. Does the iPhone have to have been unlocked?
Thanks.

Added (1). Also can someone explain the steps in doing this?

You will have to contact Verizon to get the phone unlocked. Just because the phone is unlocked does not mean that it will be able to be used with a different company.
If Metro PCS uses GSM phones, you will not be able to use your Verizon phone with their prepaid service.
I know that you can use Verizon phones with Net10, Tracfone, and Straight Talk. But you have to purchase a code to use the phone with their service after you have it unlocked from Verizon.
