Can I use my iPhone on a plane?

I'm going to New York soon and I have never flown before. It will be a 3-4 hour flight. I'm aware you are not supposed to make calls on planes, but I'm unclear about cellphone usage in general. Can I still text message or use applications like Facebook and Twitter?

You can't do anything that involves transmitting a signal while in flight. That means no phone calls and no texting. Some planes have Wi-Fi now so, if you turn on Wi-Fi only you can e-mail while in flight and browse the web if the plane is Wi-Fi equipped.

No. You are still using signal. The only thing you could possibly do is play downloaded games

You can use facebook and twitter IF the plane has Wi-Fi (it is normally about $5).

No you can't due to the signal processing rule that you have probably heard of before. But if you tried to use it, you would not get a signal. This is because a normal plane flies anywhere between 30, 000 and 40, 000 feet. This is way to far for the cell phone towers to reach because the cell phone towers have a radius signal length of 18, 000 feet.

More cell phones are being transmitted differently. Back in the '90's, cell phones would need a radio transmitter, like the one in the cockpits, but now, cell phones are made with their own radio transmitters so there's less of a chance of radio contact being interrupted by a phone call.

As I'm sure you know, that there are phones on some planes such as the 747's, 777's and some of the 737's (I believe the 737-800 and the 737-700 have them) Planes are now starting to equip Wi-Fi signals toward the rear of the plane. This is so a passenger can use the internet on their laptop and phone while not connecting through the radios in the cockpit, but they may come at a fee.

Hope this helps!
