Can I use Wi-Fi on my iPhone when I'm in Canada while turning off cellular data?

I live in the United States and my phone carrier is Verizon. If I turn off cellular data on settings and I use Wi-Fi, will I get charged?

You will not get charged. Keep in mind that you also get charged for calls and texts, even incoming. If you do not need to receive calls or texts, put it in airplane mode, then turn on Wi-Fi. This will block everything but Wi-Fi data, which is free assuming you are on a free Wi-Fi connection. It will also get you some crazy good battery life.

Perfectly fine. If you turn the cellular connection off (airplane mode) and then only connect via Wi-Fi, you won't receive any charges. You typically can't send/receive text messages, check voice mail, etc. But it is typically fine for viewing email.

I do this all the time in reverse. When traveling outside of Canada, I put the phone in airplane mode and only use Wi-Fi. The main issues are that people need to know to only contact you via email and you need to be able to find free Wi-Fi sites. Canada is actually good on the later as many hotels, coffee shops, airports, malls, etc. Have free Wi-Fi. I've taken pictures on my phone, emailed them to people, kept up with work, etc.

You may have to be careful depending upon your model of phone that it doesn't turn the cellular on automatically -- say if the battery runs low or when you turn various options on/off.
