Can the police trace a number?
Someone stole my iphone and called me from a different number regarding it. Will the police be able to track the number he called from?

The police have no interest in tracking numbers in this case, a stolen phone doesn't mean much to them.
A phone is not very significant to law enforcement, so they wouldn't put you on their list of priorities. Apple iPhones have serial numbers, Trust Stores, identification numbers, and product codes, so the central department should be able to track your phone, or just try "Find my iPhone", available from the iTunes store.

- How did the police track my number down? A week ago, i found a iphone6 in the bathroom so i put it in my pocket, it was dead already. FYI i have the same phone so i had no intent to use it. I put it in my coat pocket. This morning I received a call from the police asking about an iphone but i'm at work at the moment so i can't really call back. I realized I still had the lost phone in my coat pocket at home. It got me thinking on how and why did they get my number in the first place?
