Can you cancel your data plan after you buy an iPhone?

I'm with t-Mobil (yes they are getting the iPhone) and I want to buy an iPhone without a data plan, because it is much cheaper that way, and the ones that come with a data plan are $99 and the ones without are nearly $600! So I was wondering if I could get the phone and drop the plan?

No dropping the plan would mean you would have to pay a large fine that would be more than the cost of the phone

Nope. Smartphones = data plans.

Usually you need to buy a phone with a data plane. You can change it afterwards, but I don't think you can completely cancel it since a smartphone needs data to work.

Of course not, thats breaking your contract.

You are misunderstanding.

You purchase the phone AND pay for service. The phone costs the same amount whether you have a service plan or not- data included. You can choose to pay the nearly $600 upfront or get an extended payment plan and pay $99 down and then $20 a month for 24 months- that is for the phone itself, not the service.

Smartphones require data to work. If you have good access to Wi-Fi everywhere you go, you could possibly not pay for data but without that Wi-Fi your phone will not do anything but call and make basic texts (not picture messaging).

If I were you, I would either go to T-Mobile or call them (611 from your T-Mobile phone) and let them explain to you. It really sounds as if you are misunderstanding.
