No way! If you want to tap a landline, that can be done. People that understand electronics know how to do this very easily. Some methods of wire tapping are so carefully done even the phone company can't see the tap! (These methods are not discussed here)
It can be done by using very high resistance resistors on each line followed by capacitors going to a very high gain audio amplifier with a audio equalizer mostly for noise reduction.
Another way that gets very high quality audio is to run one leg of a landline through the voice coil windings of a small audio transformer that use to be connected to a old loudspeaker. Connect the other side of the transformer to any amplifier input.
There's dangerous voltage on phone lines when the ringing is done, that will blow up an amplifier or give a person a 90volts ac 20 hertz shock or both. If you tinker with the phone lines the phone company will know because they monitor the 48 volts dc hangup voltage. Every single phone number has it's own circuit to the local CO building.
Even with the demarcation point just inside the home or on the outside of the home, it may be a Federal crime to tap a phone line in your own home. I Know the FCC Engineer in Charge in Quincy, Massachusetts has spoken about this years ago at out Society of Broadcast Engineers annual meeting.
in Boston, but I probably wasn't listening real good. Many years ago the FCC required a beep every 10 seconds that all radio and TV stations had to put on telephone conversations that were recorded to a tape recorder. This beep was clearly heard by both people at each end of the phone line.
