Can you use a stolen iphone 5 after you restore it?

Not at all. If you live in the US it is or will be blacklisted as soon as the owner reports it stolen to either their carrier or police department. You can use it in Europe or Asia but carriers such as ATT and Tmobile both block the phones IMEI from their services.

As of now yes, you could still use it. When iOS 7 comes out & is installed, the Apple ID will be required.

My friend said he has a friend that can restore it. That he knows how to do it and it will be as if new. If I do that will it still be traced? Can I connect it and use it for myself? I live in los angeles so what would be the charges if traced and caught?
  • IPhone 5 stolen? Can I track it after wiping? My iphone was stolen, first I went to the icloud page from a notebook and enter the find my iphone button, the page try to locate my phone but it said it was offline so I put it in lost mode (put a password, my other cellphone number and the message that will display in the screen) then I press the erase option. When my iphone get internet connection it will erase all my data rigth? My question is: will it continue to track my phone after the wiping/erasing?
  • If you disabled FindMyiPhone to restore your device, will the app be enabled again after the restore? A few weeks ago I upgraded to the iPhone SE and I restored the data from my iPhone 4s onto it. (I had to disable FindMyiPhone in the process). Little did I know that it would be lost/stolen 2 weeks later. Really need to know if FindMyiPhone would be enabled because I want to know if I still have any hope at all finding it. Thanks. I tried the app already… Says it's offline. Been waiting since.
