Can you use iPhone internationally?

So I want to buy new iPhone 5, the one that comes with the contract and i want to use this iPhone in some other country than US, is that legal? I mean i want to use this iPhone and use other mobile service in country such as Kazakhstan. So can I use the iPhone that cost 300 in the other country or i should buy the one that cost 900?

Usually iPhones are locked to your network, you'll need to contact your telecommunications provider (verizon, tbmobile, at&t, etc) and have then unlock it, I think it does cost to unlock though, else you want be able to use your phone internationally

If you use a GSM phone (T-Mobile or AT&T) then you will just have to buy the SIM card for the country you're visiting and then you will be able to make/receive calls, use apps, get email, etc all as if you were using it on your original network.

My family and I are going to Europe for two weeks and I'd like to bring my phone with me so I can take pictures and keep in touch with my friends, HOWEVER I don't want any international charges for texting, data, etc. I want to bring it around with me to take pictured but ONLY would like to use it to text and use data when I'm on hotel Wi-Fi. Is there a way I can do this so I don't get charged?
