Why can't I connect to my office VPN from a laptop using USB tethering to my iphone?
If I switch from USB tethering to Wi-Fi tethering it immediately works. It is somehow specifically tied to USB tethering. I have no problem accessing the internet with USB tethering, just the VPN.
Check the firewall in the PC. The problem is probably that a port used for the VPN is blocked when USB tethered is used.
As an experiment, try disabling both the firewall and your anti-virus. If you are only accessing your office VPN, then this should be low risk for a couple of minutes, which should be long enough to establish if either of these are the cause of the problem.
If you are using Kaspersky Internet Security 2017, then it has some aggressive protection, and I have had some issues with KIS 2017 with certain connections. KIS 2016 did not have the access restriction. If you are using KIS 2017, you can still download KIS 2016 from:
http://support.kaspersky.co.uk/kis2016
It will suggest upgrading to 2017 as it is installed, but this can be declined.
In fact, both 2016 and 2017 also have a validation feature where KIS injects extra test code into web pages before a browser processes the page. This feature can be disabled in:
Settings->Additional->Network under Traffic processing.
However, one new feature in 2017 can't be disabled and means that you have to uninstall KIS 2017 to get round this. It's a bit of a pain. KIS 2016 did not have this problem. I haven't seen any similar problems with other AV products.
Other possibilities could be blocked ports in the driver for the USB connection either in the PC or the phone. I'm not sure if there's a way to fix a block in the driver if there's one.
I appreciate that Wi-Fi will probably use more battery power in both the PC and the phone, but there's probably no other major disadvantage if you have to use Wi-Fi tethering.

I have a toshiba satellite laptop on windows 8, I've tried to connect my iphone up to my laptop so that I can connect it to iTunes but every time I try to connect it up it connects for a second gets to the charging screen for a second and disconnects again and does that over and over again. USB tethering was successfully working on my home PCs and all my friends' PCs but not on my office PCs. What settings on my office PCs do I have to modify? - Why does my mac book not connect to my VPN? I'm studying abroad in China and I have access to a VPN through my university in America. I'm able to connect to the VPN but it still will not let me get on Facebook, Google and other blocked sites in China. I use the same VPN for my iPhone and iPad and it works great. I have contacted my school but the IT guys were not too much help. Is there any setting on my Macbook that would be causing this? Any ideas?
