CRAIGSLIST CHECK SCAM OR NOT?

I'm selling my iphone 4 on ebay, I was asking 400$ for it and this guy texts me and says he will pay 500$ and send it in the Mail, now he says he lives in redding Cali and his area code matches his phone #, also he talks normally and says that he will have someone pick up the phone AFTER the check clears so I won't be giving up the phone until, after the check clears, I've read about scams, should I deposit the check or get it verified of what?

This is one of the better known ones. Ask him if it's OK for you to wait 30 days after the check clears. That will give the bank plenty of time to be sure that the check is legit. If he says no, start asking questions - lots of them.

SCAM

ONLY a scammer offers MORE money -- they look for people whose greed is stronger than their common sense. Why would they offer you $500 when they could buy a NEW iPhone 5 for that?

And nobody can pick up from you with an Ebay sale -- the ONLY way you are protected is if YOU accept Paypal only AND you ship to the buyer's verified address and have proof of delivery

DO NOT deposit the check. It's counterfeit but will take 3-4 weeks to bounce. The check WILL clear -- that's why these scams work. It clears because they use a real person or company's account number. The check clears. It's not until the cancelled check is returned to the payee with their next monthly statement, which could be 4 weeks from now, that they notice a check they did not write, report it to their bank who informs your bank and they withdraw $500 from your account

Even in the rare case they paid with a real check, once they pick up from you, they will file a dispute with Ebay claiming they didn't get the phone and you scammed them. Ebay will contact you asking for proof of delivery to the buyer's address. You won't have it and Ebay will debit your account $500 while the scammer keeps your phone

Report this buyer As soon as possible to Ebay and do not respond to him
