Determining signal strength?
My iphone measures its signals as dbm (-50 to -100) however at times i find my Wi-Fi to be slower than my 3g or lte connection. In my house the Wi-Fi will range from -50 to -70 and when i'm outside my 3g or lte may be anywhere from -70 to -100 and its still pretty fast or even faster. I'm wondering how do you determine how fast your phone can download data? Does dbm just measure the signal strength ignoring how fast each signal can actually download data? Would a -70 dbm 3g connection be the same or slower than a -70 dbm lte connection?
The iPhone is lucky enough to have an app created after the website "speedtest.net". Go to the app store and search for "speedtest" and download the app, run it. My iPhone on my wireless N router in my home downloads at 20-30Mbps, if you have Wireless - G your looking for 5-20, wireless-N you want 15-35Mbps.
Anything less, i would try restarting the phone, or possibly resetting your home router by unplugging the router, count to 30, than plug the power back in.
If that doesn't fix it, you could go deeper by opening the router's firmware in a browser, but start with the basics first!
Yes, dBm just measures the received signal strength.
How much your speed drops off at low power levels depends on how good your phone receiver/antenna are.
LTE is 3G (one variant of it, anyway). LTE is faster than HSPA is faster than EDGE
Speedtest etc. Will measure the slowest link beween you and their server. Which may be your phone wireless connection, but not always. It might be your home ISP connection for Wi-Fi, or some upstream link if you have a commercial grade network connection.
- Why does my iphone have no signal? Iv'e had thhe iphone 3GS for 7 months and the singals always been fine. Today i lost signal and it won't come back, despite being in places that i know have signal.(such as my house) How can i get my signal back!
- My iPhone suddenly has weak Wi-Fi signal strength? This has been going on for about a week now and it happened suddenly. My 3GS suddenly has terrible Wi-Fi signal strength, meaning that if I'm in my room now, I can't get Wi-Fi while sitting on my bed. I have to be on the same floor basically as my router. Is there something I can do? Is there dust blocking something? Tips please?
- My iPhone 3GS keeps losing signal? I have a iPhone 3GS 5.1.1 bb 6.15.00 which is jb recently been having a problem that I have no signal or 3G while in the house but do when I go outside any ideas
- Is the iphone 4s with sprint supposed to lose signal? I never go far out of town, but half the time I pull out siri it tells me siri not available or takes a few minutes for siri to say something. I know it's not my location. It just randomly loses bars sometimes. The internet goes slower and faster but siri often lags for a full minute and it's kind of pointless to have it now.
