Do I need data or internet to use the iphone map GPS?

I'm planning on taking the metra to Chicago, and I will only be going to one place that is about 5-10 miles away from the metra, I will be walking to this place by foot so I will be relying on my GPS on my iphone to get me their.

however I have a question, my phone does not have a plan, so it has no cell phone minutes or data, just internet connetion.

will I still be able to use the GPS? Or does it use data/internet?

You'll need a data connection of some sort (Wi-Fi?) initially in order to download the directions to your destination (assuming you're using Google Maps), but once you've entered your destination and gotten the walking directions, you should be fine on just GPS.

Alternatively, you can also download the map of the area where you're going and save it to your phone for offline use. I don't have an iPhone, so I'm not sure where this feature is on the iOS version of the app, but I think it's there.

As a final option, you could download NavFree USA, an app that operates entirely offline. You'll need to download/install the app, then download the map for Illinois. You should then be good to go.

You need data to use GPS. You may want to print a paper copy of a map of the area you will be visiting. This is what I would do if I needed a map of an area that I was unfamiliar with.

If you want to actually have turn by turn navigation on your phone you will need to be connected either to the internet via Wi-Fi or data.
