Do I need to keep to SIM card in my phone until the unlocking process is completed? (O2)?

I need to unlock my iPhone SE (which is currently locked to the O2 network), but the website says it can take up to 72 hours to complete.
I received the phone from a family member who still uses the sim, and so I was wondering if, I got them to use their sim to unlock the iPhone for free on the O2 website, would they need to leave it in until the process has finished, or could they take it out and carry on using it in their new phone?

For the unlocking process, having the SIM card for the current carrier is NOT REQUIRED (so they can take their SIM card & use it with their new phone). For iPhones, the unlock process is pretty simple.

0) ONCE you get the APPROVAL notification from your carrier, you may want to wait a day before going through the unlock process… Mostly to allow your carrier to send the "OK" to Apple's servers.

1) Connect your iPhone to a computer ONLINE with iTunes.

2) OPTIONAL: In iTunes, Back up your phone -- This is to help preserve the contents of the phone. If you're giving the phone to somebody else, you may want to skip this step.

3) In iTunes, RESTORE the phone to FACTORY DEFAULT -- This will wipe everything off the phone, gets the unlocked key from Apple & updates the iOS (if needed).

4) OPTIONAL: During the set-up process, restore the contents of your phone you made earlier w/ iTunes.

That's pretty much it! If you're having problems using another carrier's SIM card, repeat the process in iTunes before contacting your carrier for assistance.

  • Process of unlocking an iPhone? So we went to unlock our iPhone 4S for $20, and they told me to bring the phone back when they call so they can activate it and stuff. I just tried putting in my sim and somehow it works. Did the unlock happen wirelessly? Like is that even possible? Or was my phone already unlocked in the first place (I tried putting in the sim a couple days ago and it didn't work)
  • Locked iPhone and need sim card to use because I restarted it but i don't have the specific sim I need. Please i'm desperate? Ok so my aunt got me an iPhone from Canada but its sim locked and it says I need to insert a sim card for it to work. The problem is i don't have a sim from that specific company that locked it and the only thing I can do is emergency calls and all that. I can't even use it as an iTouch or something.

  • Iphone 4 activation request can't be completed? I forgot my iphone passcode and I restored the phone. It asked me to choose my language, country or region, Wi-Fi etc. I did all that but the it said: activation error activation request could not be completed. If the problem persists, please contact customer care. I don't know how to fix it. I don't have a sim card inserted. Is that a problem? Not sure whether or not its jailbroken.
