Do iPhone 4, 4S or 5 screens break as easily as 3GS screens?
I dropped my 3GS a while back and the screen shattered, it cracked again today after I accidently hit it, so would an upgrade be less likely to crack?
The newer iPhones actually break MORE than the iPhone 3Gs would. This is because newer iPhones are made of more glass (the front and back are both glass). Maybe try a different type of phone, or get a tough case.

The iPhone 4 and 4S will break just as easily (and scratches more easily) but the iPhone 5 is a bit more durable, since it's made of Gorilla Glass.

I dropped my 3gs like 5 times and it never broke. Dropped my 4s once and it shattered the screen. Granted, my 4s fell flat on its face when i dropped it and for whatever reason my 3gs always landed sideways etc only scratching the non-glass areas. That made the difference.
I had the same problem, broke my screen after dropping my 4s. I bought a Griffin I phone 4s protective case. It looks bulky with a picture but its not. It's brilliant. Screen is easily accessible. It's perfect. Phone flew out my pocket only yesterday when I was cycling. Doing 35-40 mph down a long steep hill. Not a scratch on my phone or screen. Still looks brand new. The case is fine as well. It's made out of some sort of rubber that absorbs the impact when it's dropped. When it flew out my pocket it bounced down the road. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. I bought the case from an o2 shop. I can't remember what I paid for it but yesterday it saved me hundreds of pound. When I say case, the screens not covered by something, so you don't have to lift a flap up every time you want to use your phone. It's covered by a thin plastic. I've no issue regarding the touch screen element of it. Works like its uncovered. Seriously, I can't recommend it enough. Had the case for over a year. Still in good condition.
