Does downloading 1 GB of stuff use up 1 GB of data?
Here is the more detailed question that wouldn't fit in the title question up there.
If I download some stuff on my computer (1 GB of stuff ) while connected to the internet over a hotspot from my iPhone, will it use up 1 GB of data from my plan?
Actually you will be using more than 1GB. 1GB of data is broken down in smaller transmittable packages. For all those packages, the server asks whether they've arrived OK on your pc, your computer answers and if a problem with one of those smaller packages occurred (very likely over a hotspot), the packages will be resent.
Some servers use some kind of compression when sending data, but it depends on the type of data that you're downloading how much that compression can be.
It is pretty difficult to say how much actual data will be used, but if you're talking purely in gigabytes, then yes, about 1GB will be used on your data plan.
If you are connected via a "Wi-Fi" hotspot at home, in restaurants, and other social places, then it should not take away from your plan. The data limit on plans should specify "data use over the cellular network", ie, 3G/4G network data use. If you're using the iPhone as a Wi-Fi hotspot, then you will absolutely use not only 1GB, but more!
You should keep in mind that there's more going on behind the scene than just the data file itself - there's also transmit & receive signals, as well as error correction / parity bits, plus network crashes and re-transmits to name a few. If you download anything over a network (of any type), it will use more than simply the package's size (in data) to download it.
The best advice is to download on wired or Wi-Fi whenever possible and cut off the cellular network data parameter until you absolutely need it. Smartphones will use up your data quickly by updating apps or information automatically without your knowledge.
