I believe the iPhone has to be unlocked GSM or unlocked CDMA
I believe there's no roaming - you need to be near the correct brand of tower.
iPhone 4s is 2G/3G. I think iPhone 5/5s is also. So a data connection may be slower than a 4G/LTE phone.
You don't get a lot of data balance with Tracfone. For example, a 90 day 60 minute card on a Tracfone service smartphone gets you triple of 3 buckets… You get 90 days, 180 minutes, 180 texts, 180 Mb
180 Mb is not much data. As long as you have service days, you can add special cards for more data or more texts only.
Of course, data works on iPhone with TracFone. You'll need to set up the APN to get 3G or 4G LTE and your phone must have 4G capability to have 4G LTE data. 3G will work fine though.
