Upgrading IOS will not affect the data stored on any apps, however if an old app is not compatable with the latest IOS version there may be some issues.

When I'm on Facebook chat app the people who are on mobile have minutes next to their names as well as the iPod/ iPhone picture. It's misleading as you don't know if someone's currently on face book chat, does it mean how long ago they were active? So if this guy was constantly on 1 minute, does that mean he's online on his phone?
