I have seen many drop tests and things like that for the iPhone 5. Compared to many smartphones the iPhone rains supreme in its durability. Getting dings and scratches can easily happen and if the screen has a direct hit to the ground it can shatter or get a simple scrape.
(If you are worried about if the iPhone 5 will break simply buy a case, even a cheap case can protect it, and due to how skinny the iPhone 5 is you will barely notice a case)
